The Difference Between French Linen Tugs And Firehose Tugs

Not all dog play is the same.

A dog tug toy is designed for interaction begtween the owner/handler and the dog.  It is not a chew toy that should be given to the dog to amuse themselves, as they are not designed to be chewed on.  They are designed to be bitten into and held, allowing for a tugging interaction between the human and the dog.  This form of play is very satisfying, as dogs enjoy conflict between themselves and the ones they feel close with.  This is how puppies play, in order to develop the skills that will take them into adulthood.  As dogs age, the satisfaction of biting, shaking and tugging against another dog or human triggers an enjoyment that is both exciting as well as satisfying.

Playing tug with your dog does not create aggression, or compromise the relationship between the handler and the dog.  It does not create a situation where the dog does not respect your authority, and it does not foster feelings of fear if they are not "allowed to win." It is a simple interaction between yourself and your dog in a way that the dog enjoys, instead of it being the simple "transactional" play the dog usually gets.  Transactional play is where the human throws something and the dog then completes the transaction by bringing it back. While there is nothing wrong with this type of play, it is not the same as interactive play, where there is a constant give and take between yourself and the dog, instead of simply retreiving.

The amouont of the satisfaction the dog receives from tug play is going to depend on you and the tug itself.

Not all tugs are created equal.

French Linen tugs are designed from the same material that bite suits are made of.  This gives them the ability to be more flexible, giving the tug a softer feel.  This allows the dog to bite and sink his/her teeth into the material more effectively, creating a satisfying bite feeling.  The ability to bite down hard onto a soft surface allows the dog to get a better grip on the toy, and create a more aggressive play because they don't feel it slipping.  French Linen tugs are not necesarily waterproof because the material is made from a looser weave.

Firehose tugs are made from firehose material, which is a very tight weave that is naturally waterproof because the threads are so close together.  They are modeled after the bumpers that keep boats from damaging each other if they bump together at the dock, being hung over the side so as to prevent contact.  Dock diving was the result of people finding that dogs liked to retrieve things thrown off boats, and the bumpers were the most convenient thing to throw. The tougher and more durable nature of firehose tugs makes them stiffer and less satisfying for the dog to bite into.  While the durability is a major concern for people who have dogs that destroy toys, our preference of French Linen is because of the dog's preferences of biting the softer material.  Because interactive play does not let the dog alone with the toy to chew, the less satisfying bite is a major factor in choosing French Linen over firehose.

French Linen

Softer and easier of the dog's mouth when they are biting and tugging.  Most dogs prefer the softer material when playing.

Firehose

More durable and waterproof, but less satisfying for the dog because they cannot achieve a deep bite.

Our choice

After testing many variations of tugs, we chose French Linen to use in our vans because the dogs prefer it.  It is easier on the humans and the dog, creating a more satisfying play session.

Our French Linen Tugs

We designed and manufactured our own line of tugs because we could not find what we wanted anywhere else.  We have been using French Linen tugs as lures in our vans during slatmill sessions for years.  They provide the perfect combination of control for us and satisfaction for the dog, creating a situation where the dogs are having so much fun that we have to keep the tugs hidden until we are ready.

Because we were having difficulty finding the perfect size and material tugs for our vans, we decided to manufacture our own.  Now you can buy them too.

Choose the right size tug for your dog

Dogs have different size mouths, and getting the right tug for that mouth is going to make a big difference in how much they love it.
